It must have struck the few staffers as odd that, two days after his son's funeral, Prof. Calvin Hazzard was in the periodical room doing research. Perhaps throwing himself back into scholarship was a means of grappling with his sorrow. So might it have been, had that name Wick not rung like a buoy in a fogbound sea. |

On the reference terminal he tapped in the letters, finding no entry. He then checked three different WHO'S WHO's including WHO'S WHO IN THE EAST, IN THE MIDWEST, IN THE WEST, where he found no entries. But in WHO'S WHO IN SCIENCE he found an entry that made his heart skip wildly: |

Calvin read the entry twice to be certain. He made a photocopy of it, then checked the last two years' indices of the New York Times, which were only current as of last December. There were no entries for Julius Benton Wickwhich meant that the paper had published no articles by him or about him. Calvin then hurried upstairs to the periodicals room, where for the next hour he scoured the current year's copies of Newsweek, Time and U.S. News and World Report. |
